Find the right mat for the way you come home.

Entrance mats for busy doorways, muddy shoes and everyday arrivals.

What to measure at your doorwayA front door with a mat at the threshold. Arrows mark the door width, the mat width and the gap under the open door, which limits how thick the mat can be.Door widthMat width: door width or widerDoorclearance

Start with your doorway.

Measure the width, check the clearance, then choose the surface that suits the mess.

  1. 1

    Measure the width

Measure the door opening. A mat about as wide as the door, or wider, catches both feet on the way in.

  2. 2

    Check the clearance

Open the door over the spot where the mat will lie and measure the gap underneath. The mat has to be thinner.

  3. 3

    Choose for the mess

Dry grit, wet shoes or both? Pick the surface that suits what actually comes through your door.

Most doorways need one of three things.

Scrape dirt

Stiff coir or aluminum rails knock grit and gravel off shoes before it reaches the floor.

Manage moisture

An absorbent surface catches water from wet shoes and keeps it off hallways and hard floors.

Look at: Water trapper mats, Diamond-pattern mats

Fit the space

Low-profile mats clear the door; long runners and large sizes cover wide or double doorways.

Six kinds of mat, each for a different door.

What each one is good at, and what to keep in mind.

All mats
  • Boots stepping onto a plain coir doormat

    Plain coir doormats

Good for: Scraping dry dirt and grit at the front door, in sizes from 17 x 30 in to long 3 ft wide runners.

Keep in mind: Coir holds water, so this doormat lasts longest at a sheltered front door or just inside it.

  • Natural coir doormat printed with the word hello

    Printed coir doormats

Good for: A welcome at the door: Hello, Welcome, Home Sweet Home and bordered designs on vinyl-backed coir.

Keep in mind: The same coir surface as a plain doormat, so it suits a covered porch or entryway best.

  • Three thick woven coir doormats stacked by size

    Thick woven-back coir doormats

Good for: Deep, stiff coir for heavy scraping, where shoes come in from paths, lawns and gardens.

Keep in mind: Its thickness needs room under the door, so check the door clearance first.

  • Charcoal water trapper mat with a raised square pattern

    Water trapper mats

Good for: Catching water and fine dirt from wet shoes, with a low 1/4 in profile.

Keep in mind: Works best inside the door or under cover, where it can dry between wet days.

  • Blue diamond-pattern entrance mat with a rubber border

    Diamond-pattern mats

Good for: Everyday traffic at busy entrances, in charcoal, brown or blue and sizes up to 4 x 6 ft.

Keep in mind: A textured, low surface rather than a deep scraper; pair it with coir outside if mud is the problem.

  • Alumat aluminum entrance mat with black rubber channels

    Alumat aluminum mats

Good for: A crisp, low-profile entrance with aluminum rails and a rubber taper edge.

Keep in mind: A smaller range: five sizes, the largest about 23 x 47 in.
